Hidden gems and bobsleds

"If you're not enough without it, you'll never be enough with it."

Cool Runnings (1993)

Let’s rewind to 1993.

Cool Runnings hits cinemas. A brilliant film about four Jamaican sprinters who dream of competing in the Winter Olympics... as a bobsled team.

Yep, you read that right! A tropical island. Ice tracks. Olympic dreams. Based (loosely) on a true story.

For anyone who’s new to Cool Runnings, this all sounds like a punchline —but it’s not. It became one of Disney’s most-loved sports movies of all time, earning over $150 million worldwide and etching itself into pop culture with lines like, “Feel the rhythm! Feel the rhyme!”

But here’s the thing:

Beneath the laughs, the underdog spirit, and the iconic slow-clap moment at the finish line... Lies a scene almost nobody talks about. And we reckon it might just hold one of the most powerful lines in the whole film 👇

Coach Irv sits with Derice, who’s laser-focused on winning gold, believing that then, and only then will this be enough. It’s that quiet, simmering desperation so many of us carry: if I just win, achieve, fix, prove... then I’ll be okay. Then I’ll belong, I’ll be fulfilled and successful.

Irv looks at him with empathy and understanding, and shares a quiet but profound truth:

A gold medal is a wonderful thing. But if you're not enough without it, you'll never be enough with it.

This isn’t just about bobsledding, or any kind of competitive sport. This about life, and the moments when we find ourselves searching for belonging, self-worth or self-confidence in results or outcomes. It’s about the vulnerable and courageous journey we all go on to discover that we’re imperfect, and full of struggle, but that we’re unconditionally enough.

Because the truth is, we don’t ever have to do something to be someone. Our achievements, experiences, wins and losses are all part of the adventure, but they don’t define us.

To be human is to be enough (as hard as that is to remember, sometimes). We are enough, exactly as we are right now, and learning to embrace this…

Well, we’d say that’s where success truly lies.
