Flowing like water from 'I to We'

“I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it what I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work, the more I live."

George Bernard Shaw

It’s one of the most profound stages in any hero’s journey, where we get to draw on our experiences and life lessons to help others.

In many ways, it’s this act of service that actually makes a ‘hero,’ and brings the most fulfilment. As the great George Bernard Shaw once said, the true joy in life is “being used for a purpose recognised by yourself as a mighty one.”

Now, there are 28 heroes at the Monash Children’s Hospital School that we’d love to celebrate!

This special group of educators have recently gone on the Mojo Teams journey, and are already putting their learnings into practice..

Not only strengthening the culture within their organisation but also creating new activities and lesson plans for young students in their inpatient and outpatient medical programs, as well as siblings of patients from rural areas.

So much of life is uncertain, but we can often take comfort in knowing that we have the power to choose our response to different situations. The ability to shift our perspective with daily practise, patience and compassion.

The team at Monash Children’s Hospital School are doing an incredible job of sharing this principle within the classroom. One of our favourite examples of this is their exercise on Uncontrollables vs Controllables, and the use of Coca-cola vs water to explore how we can respond to life’s highs and lows:

"Proactive people are like water. Shake them up all you want... Take off the lid, and nothing happens. They are calm and cool.

If you shake a bottle of coke, the pressure builds up, and when the lid is finally removed, the bottle explodes!"

We've also loved seeing the Monash staff and students identify their Inner Fan and Inner Critic through Growth and Fixed Mindsets, as inspired by the work of Dr Carol Dwek.

Pretty cool, hey?

To the whole team at Monash Children’s Hospital School:

Congratulations on all of your hard work, courage and creativity.

Thank you for sharing your stories, and for playfully championing this work with the next generation, so they too can learn to embrace their weird and own their story 💪
