"We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started, and know the place for the first time."
T.S Eliot
Wednesday night was one of those full-circle moments that's hard to put into words.
Over 1,000 of you travelled from around Victoria (and interstate!) to celebrate the launch of Where the Light Gets In at the Melbourne Town Hall.
From all of us at Mojo: thank you for coming along and making this night so incredibly special. We hope you enjoyed the stories from Ash and Ben, the banter (well played, Hamish 😉 ), and the chance to get together with new and familiar faces.
If we could capture some of our favourite moments from the night, a few stand out… Nine, as it happens:
1. Real-time nostalgia When Hamish agreed to host the book launch, he imagined he'd be talking to around 30 people, somewhere in St Kilda… Well, cut to the big moment, and 1,300 of you filling Melbourne Town Hall.
"Have you ever felt nostalgic for a moment while you're still in it?" - that was Wednesday night for us.
2. A New Dawn: live We were treated to the opening chapter of Where the Light Gets In from Ben himself - not an easy feat in front of a big crowd, particularly when covering a very vulnerable moment in his journey with Ash Barty.
It was a powerful reminder that "storytelling is so important in terms of how we learn. We tap into emotion, and our imagination." You can be sure that there's much more of that waiting for you in the book!
3. Human-being first, human-doing second Ash reflected openly on learning to separate her self-worth from her tennis results. Fun fact: you won't find trophies and awards everywhere in her home - just photos of favourite moments with favourite people.
As she put it: "There is nothing in there to suggest that I ever hit a tennis ball, because that's my home, that's my sanctuary where I spend time with my family, my dogs. We get up and go for a walk every morning.
It's a very simple lifestyle... Then when I would go to work, it just happened to be in front of 15,000 people in some of the best courts on the planet. I think being able to separate [the human-being and the human-doing] allowed me to enjoy both more, and make the most out of both of them."
4. Mojo merch in the wild Shout out to Marcus, who Mojo teammate Georgia met by chance the next morning at a Geelong coffee shop - still wearing his Embrace Your Weird jumper 🙌 We reckon if you spot someone in Mojo merch along your travels, you've probably just met a kindred spirit.
5. Your stories - in person and online As Ben wrote in the book's dedication and shared on the night: "Whenever I give a talk, I silently dedicate it to someone in the audience who may be struggling in darkness. I never know who that person is, but I don't need to. This book is for you, too."
Hearing your reflections, seeing your photos and videos, connecting over the highs and lows - for us, it's the privilege of a lifetime. Keep the stories coming!
6. Belief kicks confidence's butt in a street fight Many clients come to Mojo seeking more confidence. What Ben has discovered over the years is that it's belief that often carries the most weight.
"Belief kicks confidence's butt in a street fight," he shared on Wednesday night. "Confidence asks "have I been here before?" Belief says "I haven't, but I trust I'll figure it out."
There are two core beliefs to explore here: I'm worthy no matter what, and I believe in my potential. Harness those and everything else follows.
7. Full circle moments Hamish, Ash, Dylan, Peggy and so many others in attendance have shaped the insights in this book - and now they get to pass these lessons on to their own kids, many of whom were listening in the room. Does it get much cooler than that? Thank you for being such an integral part of Mojo's legacy.
8. Planting the seed The saddest words that Ben hears from clients often go a little like this: "Gee, I wish I knew this when I was younger."
Well, 1,300 people have now been part of a powerful conversation on intrinsic motivation and rewarding process over outcome… You can pass these perspective shifts on to the next generation, either through your own storytelling or the book itself. It's never too late to start celebrating the human-being first, and the human-doing second. Maybe it's never too early, either.
9. Lessons from beer pong Ben's father-in-law, Rod, said it best: "Even when you lose, you win." Sometimes the strangest places hold the deepest wisdom. Head to the final chapter of Where the Light Gets In to enjoy the full story on redefining success!
Mojo community, thank you again 🙏
